Land audit sites – 14 announced, 30 to go

The NSW Government has recently announced the next tranche of government land that will be used to build new housing including social and affordable housing. The latest sites identified as suitable for housing include nine sites across Sydney and one site in Newcastle (at Stockton).

Three sites across Woolloomooloo, Sydney Olympic Park, and Hurstville will be transferred to Homes NSW, expected to deliver nearly 600 homes with more than 50 per cent anticipated to be social homes. Other sites at Marsfield, Seaforth, Minto and Arncliffe, will be developed into housing by either Landcom or in partnership with the private sector.

Steve Kamer MP, Minister for Lands and Property whose department is leading the land audit noted in June that the “… audit has identified 44 surplus sites with a potential to deliver 8,400 social homes across the state with many more to come“.

With the private market housing construction sector moving very slowly now seems like a critical time for the NSW Government to ramp up its action on delivering these additional homes. With earlier announcements attracting some criticism we are looking forward to commitments that will deliver more and better social housing. And soon.
