Vale Hannah Middleton: Social justice leader, activist, and lifelong friend

Friend and colleague of Shelter NSW and much-admired, long-term advocate for housing justice, Dr Hannah Middleton, sadly passed away on Friday 13th of June. We were honoured to attend her funeral service and hear great testimony to her long life of fighting for social justice, until the end.

Shelter NSW worked alongside Hannah for many years, particularly in her role as a local leader and member of ‘Hands Off Glebe’. In an issue of “The Guardian” – The masthead of the Communist Party of Australia – she was quoted as having “an unerring finger on the political pulse of this country for half a century”. On her 80th birthday a few years ago, instead of gifts, Hannah asked for donations for organisations she supported, and Shelter NSW was a beneficiary of that commitment. We remain forever grateful of her solidarity in action for housing justice.

Vale, Hannah.
