Shelter on air: From Grunge to Glamour and Crossing Borders

The Shelter NSW team has been taking to the airwaves lately, with CEO John Engeler and Senior Policy Officer Thomas Chailloux touching on emerging housing issues and rarely considered crossovers.

John joined Dr Johari Hussein Nassor Amar on ‘Crossing Borders’. John, joined by Jackson Hills (QShelter, General Manager – Policy and Strategic Engagement), spoke with Johari about the cross border challenges for people in need of housing support who live near the NSW–QLD, and the future of housing policy in the area. Amongst other issues, John and Jackson from the Shelter network talked about how rental bond policies vary between states, and what that means for renters, the way emergency housing services operate on either side of the border, and the different planning and certification approaches for build-to-rent and modular housing, as well as the role of large scale housing investment across jurisdictions in building climate resilience.

Meanwhile, Thomas spoke with Thomas Glass on 2SER about Shelter NSW collaboration with Qtopia to deliver ‘From Grunge to Glamour’, a walking exploration of Darlinghurst, and its rich history of queer culture and liberation. While housing justice and LGBTIQ+ issues are rarely discussed together, they come together in the microcosm of Darlinghurst, a suburb looking for a way to remain an inclusive community in the broad sense of the term as gentrification and housing affordability pressures increase in inner city Sydney.

Thomas spoke about the queer liberation movement in the broader context of social justice, touched on Shelter NSW housing policy priorities, and finished by discussing the ‘soundtrack of Darlinghurst’ with 2SER host Thomas Glass.
