Shelter NSW turns 50

Shelter NSW had its 50th Birthday this month, with our AGM kicking off a series of anniversary celebrations (more to come in the new year). Complete with a cake, a balloon arch, and appearances from Ministers Jackson and Chanthivong, we certainly had a night to remember!

We would like to express our gratitude to all our fantastic members who have made this organisation so strong over the past five decades. The policy advocacy work we do is made possible by the support of our committed and active membership, some of whom have been supporting Shelter NSW since its inception. Whether you joined us in our first year, our fiftieth, or you sign up tomorrow, we appreciate your contribution to the campaign for housing justice in NSW.

Thank you also to our speakers at the AGM. Uncle Allen Murray, representing the Metropolitan Aboriginal Land Council, offered a moving Welcome to Country to begin the event. Our CEO John Engeler then introduced Minister Rose Jackson, who spoke on the importance of policy advocacy and community support for housing reform. The Chair of the Board, Simone Parsons, reflected on the past year and the long-term legacy of Shelter NSW, before Treasurer Bill Steenson delivered the financial report for approval.

We also heard from Poppy Dowsett and Sophia Maalsen as they stepped down from the Board after many years of excellent work. New Board members, Murray Mayes and Liz Adamczyk, were welcomed into the fold alongside the other returning members.
