Shelter NSW, along with other community and social sector advocates and the City of Sydney, has long played a game of cat and mouse with the NSW Government on its plans for the redevelopment of 600-660 Elizabeth Street Redfern. As we noted back in February 2023, our aim is to preserve and protect public land and public housing; introduce additional regulated affordable rental housing for local workers and secure housing for First Nations people delivered by the Aboriginal Community Housing sector.
Over time we’ve been pleased to see this proposal improve and recently made a submission in support of the current proposal being made by Homes NSW in partnership with Bridge Housing to deliver around 350 new social, affordable and specialist disability support homes on the 600-660 Elizabeth Street, Redfern site (to be known as Redfern Place). The site will also include a community hub, a new commercial office and a large new community facility for the Redfern local community to replace the existing ageing PCYC facility.
