Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) NSW State Conference in Wollongong

Shelter NSW was excited to be a sponsor and active participant at the 2024 Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) NSW State Conference in Wollongong.

The Conference explored aspects of urban transformation, adaptability, diversification, and negotiation. It also examined how this transformation impacts our youngest Australians And First Nations People.

Kiersten Fishburn, Secretary of the Department of Planning and Environment was a key speaker along with the Hon. Paul Scully, MP NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces.

Sue Weatherly, President of the NSW chapter of PIA facilitated a very interesting session about City Leadership (to deliver ”Resilience and Urban Governance’) with Eamon Waterford – Committee for Sydney, and Luke Nicholls a Director at the Planning Partnership office, Western Sydney Planning Partnership.

John Engeler, CEO Shelter NSW, was on a panel about ‘Steering the Future of High-Density Urbanism’. John noted how encouraging it is to see PIA encouraging planners to be recognising the impact of tenure and socio-economic status in people’s housing experiences.

Shelter NSW was also happy to see the presentation by Ben Dowler & Lex Davidson from the City of Sydney on Preserving Pride: the LGBTIQA+ Social and cultural Place Strategy for Oxford Street.

Special thanks to President Sue Weatherley, John Brockhoff (Principal Policy Officer, National & NSW) and Tessa Faucheur (NSW/ACT State Manager). Special shoutout to Matt Collins, CEO of PIA nationally, who we continue to look forward to working with increasingly given the National focus that planning now is recognised for.
