NSW Government brings social housing maintenance function back under direct government control

Earlier this week the NSW Government announced that it will overhaul how it manages maintenance for its 95,000 social housing properties. A new, one stop ‘Maintenance Hub’ will be created within the Homes NSW agency with the goal of streamlining requests for maintenance; improving quality and outcomes for tenants and better value for taxpayers.

We like the sound of any headline about Government taking back control of anything to do with social housing…”. This was our Senior Policy Officer Cathy Callaghan being asked about the announcement by ABC Sydney Radio Sydney announcer Sarah Macdonald early Monday morning.

You can listen to the 5 minute interview via the link below where Cathy welcomed the announcement but acknowledged the large amount of work ahead for the Government in not just establishing this new maintenance hub but running it. She also relayed Shelter NSW’s hope that once established, Homes NSW might attend to more maintenance work in a planned way rather than in response to tenant complaints.

The 5 minute interview ran at about 10:05am on 13/11/23 (at about 1:42 mark on the broadcast recording): ABC Sydney Radio website
