Over 57,000 households are currently approved and waiting for social housing in NSW. And we know that’s just the tip of the iceberg. So many people are not registered – finding the process too hard or too disheartening.
So, we were very pleased to see the Auditor-General of NSW setting up an inquiry into social housing with a particular focus on the ‘front end’ process and experience. Our dedicated Shelter NSW Members’ Policy Working Group (pictured below) recently met to discuss the opportunity to advocate for a better and fairer system noting that we are well-placed to comment with lived experience amongst members as well as groundbreaking research on the issue.
Details are the review can be found on the AG’s website. Submissions can be made up until 28 February 2025 and should focus on:
- the process of applying for social housing (including evidence requirements)
- the process of being offered and accepting a social housing property
- support programs and services offered to new social housing tenants.
