New Federal Minister for Housing and Homelessness

People have a right to safe, stable and affordable housing

Shelter NSW, along with our state and national counterparts, is feeling encouraged by the leadership and commitment that the new Minister for Housing and Homelessness, Julie Collins MP, has already brought to the housing crisis. This quote above is from a speech made by Minister Collins at this week’s AHURI Homelessness Conference held in Canberra. During the same speech she talked about the need for a truly national plan to end homelessness and address the broader housing crisis.

Like the Prime Minister, Minister Collins grew up in public housing as noted in this news article. We trust that this level of experience and insight will inform her approach to this challenging cabinet portfolio.
Our CEO John Engeler was happy to join 2GB radio journalist Michael McLaren overnight for an extended chat about how the shortage of public housing is holding back efforts to reduce homelessness. Early in the podcast, McLaren himself notes the efforts of the new federal minister to address this issue.
