Housing challenges in regional, rural and remote NSW are diverse, complex and often very different from those in the metropolitan areas of Sydney, Newcastle, and Wollongong. From workforce shortages and rental stress to limited supply, ageing stock and the impacts of short-term letting, country communities are facing unique pressures. But also unique opportunities.
This year, at Shelter NSW, we are strengthening our policy and advocacy focus on regional housing. But as the stateâs peak housing policy body, we can only be effective if our work is grounded in the lived realities of the communities we represent.
This is why we are planning to organise two regional housing forums to craft a precise, place specific diagnosis of housing issues and propose solutions to local, state and federal government together.
We know frontline services are stretched. Resources are tight, demand is high, and time for policy conversations can be limited. Yet your insight is critical. You see first-hand what is and isnât working. You understand the specific pressures affecting your town, your clients and your region.
We rely on your experience to ensure our systemic advocacy is informed, practical and responsive to local needs.
If you are a frontline service, housing provider, local advocate or community organisation working in regional NSW, we would love to hear from you.
We are looking for regional NSW partners to organise these important conversations.
Please contact Drew Beacom at drew@shelternsw.org.au to share your insights and help shape stronger housing solutions for regional communities.
