Over the past six months, Shelter NSW has supported National Shelter in a more extensive way than usual. After the exceptional Emma Greenhalgh, who had spent three years as both Treasurer of the Board and then CEO, moved on from National Shelter, Karen Walsh agreed to step into the role for a six-month period in a part-time capacity.
Under Karenâs enduring leadership, and as it enters its 50th year, National Shelter has made significant strides in securing a sustainable future for the organisation, with the prospect of core funding being restored as part of the new government elected last week. Of note, is the way in which Karen was able to work directly with Ministers, members of Parliament and their advisors, government departments, and other peak bodies to strongly and efficiently advocate for a better housing system. The development of a new National Shelter policy platform centred on five policy asks to fix Australiaâs broken housing system was a key piece of work. Weâd like to thank Karen wholeheartedly for her contributions and wish her all the best in her future endeavours.
Shelter NSW supported National Shelter through John Engeler stepping up in his role as Chair to attend federal meetings and assisting Karen where necessary, Thomas Chailloux guiding policy development, particularly in the lead up to the federal election, and Matilda Sutherland providing administrative support throughout. Weâd like to thank John, Thomas, and Matilda for their work as well as the Board for their support and ongoing guidance. National Shelter will continue to advocate for better housing for all, pushing local, state, and federal government level to use the policy levers at their disposal so people have access to safe, secure, affordable and high-quality housing.
