It’s (way past) time to End No-Grounds Evictions in NSW

The multi-party commitment to ending No Grounds Evictions was a significant and very welcome feature of the NSW State Election campaign.

In late June, Shelter NSW responded to an invitation to contribute to a NSW Legislative Assembly Select Committee - Inquiry into Residential Tenancies Amendment (Prohibiting No Grounds Evictions) Bill 2024.

We reiterated the importance and urgency of ending no-grounds evictions for periodic and fixed term leases. Taking a ‘middle of the road’ approach and stopping short of ending no-grounds evictions for all lease types will result in perverse but totally foreseeable consequences.

We thank our friends at the Tenants Union NSW for leading the conversation on what are reasonable grounds for eviction, and we happily supported these in our submission to the Inquiry.
