It’s time for people with mobility limitations in NSW to have the same rights as they do elsewhere.

Every Australian should have access to housing that supports them across their lifespan and adapts to changing needs.

One third of social housing households have a tenant with a disability. But with social housing such as niche offering (4.7% of all housing stock in NSW and falling) private housing and especially new builds need to be of a better standard.

Shelter NSW via our partnership with National Shelter proudly supports the Opening the Door Project and the Building Better Homes campaign.

The NSW government is yet to commit to adopting the livability and accessibility standards mandated in the revised National Construction Code. NSW and WA are the only states in Australia that are yet to adopt the new mandatory accessible housing standard. Both the Disability Royal Commission and the NDIS Independent Review recommended they sign up as soon as possible.
