With plans for significant growth in housing supply across Greater Sydney by 2036, pressure is on local government is mounting. Shelter NSW has recently stepped up its efforts to support local government to better support the delivery of affordable housing.
A recently developed training package focuses on stronger interventions for uptake of affordable housing via the planning system, through council’s initiatives and joint ventures.
The first Council to receive the training was Georges River. Shelter’s role was to inform the new elected Councillors about how a strong Affordable Housing Scheme will help meet the currently unmet demand for key workers in the significant education, health and retail sectors, while helping to sustain a diverse local community within the LGA.
