“Delivering affordable housing… isn’t an exception, it’s what we do” Minister for Planning

Our CEO John Engeler was happy to attend yesterday’s Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) event and join a panel alongside the Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully, Princess Ventura of Urbis, and facilitated by TBH Managing Director Jonathan Jacobs.

The Minister outlined the steps the NSW Government has taken to address the housing crisis, acknowledging that high housing costs are pushing key workers to the fringes of our cities. We were pleased to see him challenge the private sector to look at their business models noting that requiring the delivery of more affordable housing is not unreasonable – “Delivering affordable housing alongside market housing isn’t an exception, it’s what we do.”

John Engeler spoke about housing security as the gold standard we should be aiming for: housing that’s affordable with good amenity, accessibility and agency. Housing that feels like home. He spoke about the need to embrace Modern Methods of Construction, to build more low or mid-rise buildings and to retrofit existing properties to allow for greater accessibility.
