Committee for Sydney calls for bold action to tackle chronically unaffordable housing

Our joint statement with PIA coincided with a related launch by the Committee for Sydney of its report on Sydney’s Chronically Unaffordable Housing. The report details the significant costs to the people of Sydney and NSW and calls for three key things.  Shelter CEO John Engeler and Senior Policy Officer Cathy Callaghan were pleased to attend the launch event and noted that the Committee’s calls are entirely consistent with Shelter’s calls.

Committee for Sydney – bold measures required to address chronic housing unaffordability:

  1. Bring Sydney in line with other global cities by introducing an inclusionary zoning target (to provide affordable housing in new developments) on all rezonings, with appropriate transitional provisions
  2. Invest in much more social and affordable housing
  3. Significantly increase housing supply and do it well – with good transport connectivity, affordable housing, open space, schools, child care, shops and services
