Any day that provides more housing security for people is a good day. These were the words of our CEO John Engeler, in his capacity as the Chair of National Shelter, as he joined leaders from the Property Council of Australia and the Community Housing Industry Association in welcoming legislation passed by the Federal Government to enable a large Build-to-Rent program across the country. The changes introduce tax incentives for buildâtoârent projects, consisting of 50 or more apartments or dwellings, that are made available for rent. Requirements include:
- single ownership of the homes for at least 15Â yearsÂ
- a minimum 10 per cent of dwellings in a development need to be made available as affordable tenancies.Â
- tenancies must all be offered for a minimum of five years, instead of three years.Â
The amendments made to secure more (genuinely) affordable tenancies and more protections for renters are especially welcomed.
