Housing is the talk of town in Kiama at the moment, with the exhibition of the updated Kiama Council Housing Strategy (submissions close on 27 April).  

John Engeler, Shelter NSW CEO, was a guest speaker on Kiama Community Radio to talk about housing policy, what different levels of government can do to support people to access secure, affordable housing and inclusive communities, and dispel commonly held misconceptions about social and affordable housing, tenancy legislation, and the solutions to the failures of Australia’s housing system. John took the opportunity to highlight the potential for local government to deliver affordable housing through inclusionary zoning contribution schemes and safeguard the long-term rental market in coastal communities such as Kiama through better regulation of short-term holiday accommodation like Airbnb.
