Work is progressing on reform of legislation to provide extended coverage and better protections for people who rent their home in a marginal and/or informal way, including boarding houses residents.
While Shelter NSW is unable to provide detailed commentary at this stage, we were privileged to be invited to two roundtables hosted by the NSW Rental Commissioner, Trina Jones, to progress the development of the new legislation, alongside other housing and homelessness sector representatives, tenancy legislation experts, industry and local government representatives, and academics.
Thomas Chailloux, Shelter NSW Senior Policy Officer, delivered a keynote address to the roundtable, setting the scene about what the boarding houses and marginal accommodation sector provides (and does not provide) to its residents, who are some of the most vulnerable people in our state, and why Government must provide adequate regulation and protection.
