- $6.6 Billion investment in social housing and homelessness services was a historic commitment to tackling the housing crisis in NSW. We welcomed the large commitment but recognise that there is a lot more to be done (by the Commonwealth and State) in order to reverse the long-term trends of poor and declining investment in the critical safety net of social housingÂ
- Landmark tenancy reform: after decades of advocacy led by the Tenants Union of NSW, the NSW Parliament has legislated to ends ‘no grounds’ evictions, make it easier to have pets as a renter; caps rent increases to once a year and improve rental payment rules.Â
- Social housing energy update â NSW and Commonwealth governments are working with the social housing sector to implement NSW Social Housing EnergyâŊPerformance Initiative (SHEPI) | NSW Climate and Energy Action to upgrade approximately 24,000 social housing homes by June 2027 to improve livability and save tenants money. A further $18.3 million Community Housing Energy Performance grant was announced by the NSW State Government in September. Â
- $1 million annual increase in funding to Tenancy Services until 2028 (October) â the NSW Government announced an increase to the NSW Govt announces $4 million over 4 years extra funding for improved access to advice and advocacy for tenants | Tenants’ Union. This program consists of 21 local organisations across NSW, handling around 30,000 requests for tenancy advice each year. Â
- Strata laws are being changed to address the issues experienced by people who own or live in strata property (something we have raised concern about).Â
- Mandatory Inclusionary Zoning (MIZ) Framework introduced across key transport precincts in Greater Sydney, Illawarra, Central Coast and the Hunter:Â not withstanding our concern about the low affordable rental housing base rates, we recognise that this program is the first widespread mandatory inclusionary zoning program driven by the State Government.Â
