2024 NSW Drug Summit Report

The 2024 NSW Drug Summit report was released last week. It contains 56 recommendations organised around 12 key areas, including better access to and funding for health and social services, prevention, information, family and community support, harm reduction, reducing stigma and discrimination, and better diversion programs from the criminal justice system.

While much of the conversation around drug policy in NSW has been focused on decriminalisation and overhauling early criminal justice diversion programs, and rightly so, Shelter NSW was keen to highlight the importance of housing for both diversion and recovery. Like many other issues in their lives, people can only address the harm caused to themselves and others by their drug use if they have access to safe, secure, adequate housing. Our submission advocated for clear pathways for those exiting custody and other institutional settings to access safe and accessible accommodation, and for housing to be included as a key consideration in treatment and diversion initiatives.

In a NSW Health media release, the Hon. Ryan Park MP, Minister for Health, said the government would “carefully consider the findings and respond in due course”.
