Renters rights: looking forward to leadership and delivery on a ‘better deal’

The National Association of Renters Organisations (NARO) and National Shelter have released a 2-year performance report into the Commonwealth ‘Better Deal for Renters’.  From our perspective, we greatly welcome Commonwealth changes in the ‘machinery of government’ (MOG) which commits the government to meaningful national leadership and providing stewardship in creating a rental system where the rights of renters are not dependent on their postcode, city, state or territory.  While some states are continuing to make progress on better tenancy legislation since the announcement of the Better Deal for Renters in 2023, such as the removal of ‘no-grounds’ evictions from the Residential Tenancies Act 2010 in NSW, others have become laggards and are allowing for a significant gap to develop across state borders.

The report calls for more leadership from the Commonwealth to harmonise rental regulations across the country and to deliver on the National Cabinet commitments.
